Thousands of people participated to express their support and solidarity with the Tamil-speaking people in Eelam who suffered the brutal massacre of the Sri Lankan government. The event also brought together those who wish to continue the struggle for the rights of Tamils – both in Sri Lanka and in India.

However, it also exposed those who talk the talk but do not have any interest in actually making a stand. The current chief minister of Tamil Nadu and her party AIADMK and the other main right-wing party DMK paid no attention to this event despite their rhetoric of defending ‘Tamil Eelam’. These parties have been using the ‘Eelam issue’ to get their ‘Dravidian’ credentials back among voters. This explains the increased rhetoric and pretence of defending Eelam. But in reality they are not prepared to do anything in the interest of poor Tamils in Tamil Nadu – let alone defending the plight of Eelam Tamils. With the exception of Vaiko (MDMK) and Ram Vilas Paswan, the president of Lok Janshakthi Party from the state of Bihar who attended the event, none of the leading political figures who use the Eelam issue for their election purposes took part in the remembrance.

This remembrance was organised by the May 17 movement along with various other groups. Members and supporters of the New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India) and Tamil Solidarity also took part. The May 17 movement was formed by young people after the so-called end of the war in 2009 May 17. This movement is now established as a key movement in Tamil Nadu which campaigns for the rights of Tamil-speaking people in Eelam and Tamil Nadu and attracts a number of young people.

The New Socialist Alternative and Tamil Solidarity have been in discussion with this movement in terms of how best to take the struggle forward. Tamil Solidarity’s participation was warmly welcomed by the activists. Jagadish G Chandra (New Socialist Alternative CWI-India) travelled from Bangalore to participate as requested by the May 17 movement. The leaflet brought out by the New Socialist Alternative was distributed and appeared to strike a chord with those who attended because it put forward a strategy for struggle by ordinary working and young people. Many young people are keen to get involved and to join Tamil Solidarity. The event showed the benefit of jointhttp://www.socialism.in/wp-admin/ activity and campaigning and Tamil Solidarity looks forward to further work with May 17 and other serious campaigns.

The following leaflet has been brought out by the New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India) for the event commemorating the Genocidal war in Sri Lanka and demanding justice for the Tamils in Sri Lanka. The event is being jointly organized by the May 17th Movement and Periyar Dravidar Kalakam at 5 PM on 20th May at Marina Beach, Chennai (Tamil Nadu). Jagadish G Chandra (New Socialist Alternative CWI-India) along with other members of the New Socialist Alternative and Tamil Solidarity will be participating in the event.

Seek Justice- By All Means Necessary!

It is exactly three years ago, the absolute horror spectacle of the genocidal war, killing tens of thousands of innocent and defence less Tamils was unleashed in the northern parts of Sri Lanka. This demonic war conducted by the Sinhala chauvinist, Buddhist communal regime of Sri Lanka led by Mahinda Rajapakse Inc. was covertly and overtly supported and executed by the ruling regimes of India, China, Japan, Pakistan, Israel, UK and above all the Imperialist USA.

While the communal regime in Sri Lanka is trying to paint a picture of normalcy to the out side world with all the fanfare and the façade of being a elected democracy. But the recent events of UNHRC resolution, Channel 4 exposés have opened a Pandora’s box highlighting the stinking nature of the regime and the war machine there.

  Build the Mass Struggle

Above all even the resolution at the UNHRC is a product of the relentless mass pressure that has been built around the world indicting the Mahinda Rajapake’s regime of heinous war crimes. The forces such as the Tamil Solidarity campaign & May 17th Movement and others have been earnestly building mass democratic pressure both with in India and abroad amongst the Tamil diaspora.

It is no doubt that the set back caused by the military defeat of the rebellion has had an enormous disarray among those all who genuinely favoured the Home Land i.e. the Ealam for the island’s Tamils in the North and East of Sri Lanka. But the despair is fast disappearing, and a new awakening among the ordinary Tamil masses is on the rise in relation to all the day to day issues of the People in general and Tamil populace in particular.

Class Unity is the Key

The extraordinary class unity that has been witnessed in the mass opposition to the Kudankulam Nuclear Plant, shows the power of the mass democratic struggles that can be built. A time has come to understand that movements of sectional character, however militant may be, are an easy prey to the machinations of the ruling classes, a glimpse of which we saw in the provocateur act of the Congress through Mullaiperiyar Dam issue.

Nothing less than a mass democratic pressure built on an international scale led by the working people of all nationalities can bring justice to our Tamil brethren in Sri Lanka. The New Socialist Alternative (CWI-India) and the forces of Committee for a Workers’ International (CWI) in over 45 countries have been in the forefront of such efforts. United Socialist Party (CWI- Sri Lanka) has a heroic record of defending Tamils and fighting unequivocally for the Right of Self Determination of Tamils including secession, while totally defending the democratic rights of all the minorities.

From the days of the brutal genocidal war, the forces of CWI are on an relentless efforts to bring justice to the oppressed Tamils in Sri Lanka through their campaigning efforts. New Socialist Alternative & CWI are in total solidarity with the International campaign; Tamil Solidarity to seek justice for the Tamils.

End the oppressive system of Capitalism

Seeking justice to the brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka is no longer an issue which is isolated and far removed from the struggles of immediate concern, be it Kudankulam, atrocities on Daliths and Adivasis or land and livelihood issues. All these issues point us in the direction of the task of replacing the oppressive Capitalist system.

The New Socialist Alternative(CWI-India) fully stands by the struggle of the Tamil people and demands:

An independent war crimes investigation Withdraw the troops! No to detention camps! Stop Arming Sri Lankan regime! Democratic rights for all! Support independent trade unions! Defend the right to self-determination! Support the struggle of all oppressed nationalities Better condition for Tamil refugees Remove private interests and corruption End the caste grip End the onslaught against the environment. Land to the landless.

But ...Read the Rest

Chennai, a city known for humidity and extreme summers, has turned into a city of nightmare with the unaddressed acute power shortage in the state of Tamil Nadu (TN). With a grave 4000 MW of power shortfall, 2 hour power cuts have haunted the residents of the state’s capital, for almost 75 days now. But the worst hit have been the rural areas with 4 to 8 hours of power cuts every day. With the people of the state staging protests and crying their woes out, the Jayalalitha led AIADMK government of Tamil Nadu has only turned a deaf ear.

The production rates from the rural areas have collapsed with the power crisis, making livelihood difficult for the micro, small and medium enterprises. Students have also been hit especially in this season of exams. As small commercial establishments are running into losses, the entire state seems to be on the verge of a crisis.

This opportunistic government, however, as usual has been using this power crisis in playing one of its dirty political games. Whether the power shortage is real or one that has been deliberately created by the government itself has also been questioned (given the fact that Tamil nadu is relatively a power surplus state). But what is definitely clear is that the government has used this as an excuse in sowing the illusion that the highly dangerous Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP) will come to the rescue and thus putting the lives of thousands at risk. The government, backed by eminent figures like former President Abdul Kalam, have been indoctrinating the masses with this persistent misinformation. But the truth, however, is that KKNPP will not solve the present power crisis and a few reasons for this includes:

* Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant cannot produce electric energy soon after its commissioning.

* Even if the production starts by August this year, the plant can only function at 60 % (at the max) of its promised 2000 MW capacity, making it only 1200 MW.

* In the produced 1200 MW, 10%, i.e., 120 MW will be consumed by the plant itself leaving 1080 MW.

* With the centre’s order to the TN government to share 50 % of the generated power with Kerala state, the producer is left with 540 MW.

* Allowing 25 % loss on the account of transmission and distribution, the producer is left with 405 MW against a shortage of 4000 MW.

(Courtesy: http://dianuke.org )

Thus, the 10 % from the total shortfall can be achieved from KKNPP by overlooking the extreme inefficiencies of the entire project. These are some of the facts that the politically driven Tamil Nadu media and the mainstream corporate controlled media in India have neglected (or more correctly, deliberately withheld) to disclose to the public.

The state government of Tamil Nadu recently opened up opportunities to set up manufacturing units for MNCs like Ford, Hyundai and Nokia, although a problem of power shortfall is on the rise. While the governments has opened the gates for capital investments, where all the power for such energy intensive industries is going to come from is anyone’s guess. The luxuries of the urban world such as air conditioned malls, corporate houses and other such wasteful commercial enterprises have been a broad day light burglary of electric power from the ordinary people.

The much celebrated IPL (Indian Premier League) is yet another example of power wastage. With the state in deep agony of power shortage, flood lit matches have been consuming thousands of kilowatts of electricity every time a match is played. Where is the massive power supply to this coming from? This is the power that is being taken away from the students preparing for examinations, from the working people dependent on power supply to earn their daily bread and the people living in rural areas who are all suffering because of this. As an entertainer, IPL, is goaded as a success for the capitalist class. But in reality, it is highly insensitive on the part of both the government or the IPL promoters to even hold the game in Tamil Nadu in such a situation.

With the summer getting hotter day by day, the government has deliberately not taken any steps in tackling this crisis and refuses to come clean on the real state of affairs. While the power deprived people of the state are burning in fury, the situation is only being used as an opportunity by the government, both at the centre and the state, to rake up false claims in order to meet its ends.

Director : Balaji Shaktivel

Though India is the largest producer of films, only a few films really reflect its reality. In the midst of a highly commercialized industry, Balaji Shaktivel’s Tamil film Vazhakku En 18/9 is an exception in many ways.

Vazhakku En 18/9 is the movie about four youngsters from different backgrounds whose lives lie devastated by certain incidents. The movie starts with an investigation of a case by a police officer. Narrated with two different viewpoints of the case, the film helps us understand the contradictory nature of today’s society. A spendthrift rich man’s son, a poor platform worker, an upper middle class girl craving for the latest gadgets, an honest servant maid who helps find a lost ring; a talented street play artist without opportunities, a poor sex worker helping a person find a job while high-class sex workers helping in closing illegal deals; these are some of the contradicting characters in the film.

As the story moves on, the film tells us about how unethical use of modern technology have, for example, made women’s privacies vulnerable. The movie also highlights about the problems due to high interest rate in the micro finance industry and the plight of child laborers in the savories industry in North India. The movie helps us to understand how the nexus between law enforcement agencies and businessmen can affect the lives of many ordinary working people. The climax of the film is whether ordinary working people can stand up against powerful interests and is it possible for them to get any justice at all.

Unlike other commercial cinemas, all actors in this movie were new comers, with an exceptional performance by the street play artist – Chinnaswamy . The cinematography by Vijay Milton was another feat, as the entire movie was shot using a Canon EOS 7D digital still camera, but yet making it all appear very natural and real. Oscar award-winning documentary film “Smile Pinki” composer fame R Prasanna scored music for the movie.

This movie is definitely not the type of usual unimaginative commercial films which hit screens regularly. And at the same time, it is not an art type cinema genre with a limited audience appeal. In a sense, it is balance of both without losing its social message nor its appeal to the younger generation of cinema goers.

The following article is written by Kshama Sawant (CWI-USA) who is currently running for a seat from Seattle in the State House of Representatives, Washington State, USA. She will be challenging Frank Chopp – the Democratic speaker of the House in a bid not only to challenge the status quo but also the two party domination in the USA (both shamelessly representing the interests of the corporates). In her own words, “During an election dominated by career politicians who are loyal to big business, I am running as a Socialist Alternative candidate to make sure there is at least one independent left-wing, pro-worker candidate in Washington State worth voting for.”

Unlike her opponents whose interests in politics or elections is very much connected to their careers and corporate interests, Kshama’s foray into elections as a conscious socialist, is to represent the voice of the 99% of mainly working people, poor and other oppressed people not seen and not heard in the mainstream corporatized media of the United States. And also to put forward the ideas of socialism as the only alternative to the crisis ridden system of Capitalism. Incidentally, Kshama is of Indian origin and originally hails from Bangalore.

Editors
http://socialism.in

I am running against the Democratic Speaker of the House, Frank Chopp, for the state House of Representatives in the 43rd District in Seattle to build a stronger movement that fights for the needs of regular working people and the poor. The Democratic and Republican Parties represent the interests of the 1%, and I believe it is essential that we, the 99%, have our own representation.

Since the Great Recession broke out in 2008, the Washington State legislature has cut $10.5 billion from essential services such as education, health care, and human services, as well as cutting benefits and jobs for state employees (www.ofm.wa.gov/budget12/highlights/4_2011-13Budget.pdf).

The state Basic Health program has been decimated with $1.7 billion in funding slashed, cutting 60,000 off its rolls. Other cuts include $2.7 billion in K-12 education; $1.7 billion in state and K-12 employee compensation; $1.3 billion in higher education; $551 million for disability, long-term health care, and mental health; and $730 million in other human services. Referring to the 2011 budget, Adam Glickman, vice-president of SEIU Healthcare 775NW, stated to reporters that the politicians “should be ashamed of themselves,” (WA State Budget and Policy Center).

These brutal cuts have been implemented at a time of historic economic crisis when working people and the poor need these services more than ever.

As a teacher of economics at Seattle Central Community College and an activist in the American Federation of Teachers Local 1789, I know all too well that public education has been savaged. Initiatives to fund smaller class sizes and cost-of-living raises for teachers have been canceled, and huge tuition increases have been pushed through. With the legislature passing devastating cuts to financial aid and other programs, it’s more and more difficult every year for ordinary people to afford to go to college.

These cuts were enacted at the same time that Washington-backed corporations enjoyed massive profits, assisted by bailouts and subsides paid for by working and middle-class taxpayers.

Washington State is home to some of the nation’s wealthiest corporations, including Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon and Starbucks. Over the last three decades they have extracted over 500 tax exemptions for big business from the state legislature. These total an astonishing $6.5 billion a year in lost revenue – enough to reverse all the cuts and improve our state services (Washington State Budget & Policy Center, 12/9/2010).

The same political parties who today say there is no money for vital social services granted Boeing a $3.2 billion handout in the last recession, while simultaneously making it harder for seasonal workers to claim unemployment benefits. In 2011 the state legislature completely ignored the will of the voters who rejected Washington ballot initiative 1082 and went ahead and reduced the amount corporations have to pay to compensate workers injured on the job.

My opponent, Democrat Frank Chopp, will try to blame Republicans for this program of subsidies for wealthy corporations and cuts for the rest of us. However, this argument doesn’t hold water. The Democratic Party has held the governorship and a majority in both the state House and Senate during this entire period.

In fact, as Democratic Speaker of the House since 2002, Chopp has been the most powerful member of the Washington State House. Yet he has used his position to consistently oversee legislation that benefited the richest 1% at the expense of the 99%.

Chopp, like Democratic Party politicians across the country, has adopted the viewpoint that business interests must be safeguarded and that cuts in public services are the only realistic response to budget deficits. I believe it is absolutely necessary that we challenge that fallacy and fight against the self-serving corporate agenda it represents.

If elected, I will publicly and relentlessly expose the corrupt big-business policies of the state government, and instead provide a political voice for workers, youth, the poor, and all those oppressed by capitalism such as women, people of color, and LGBT people.

As an activist in the Occupy Wall Street movement, I have seen how people are ready to fight Corporate America’s domination of our society and stand up to Wall Street’s two political parties.

The struggles of Occupy succeeded in shifting the national political agenda in a matter of just a few months. This shows the potential power that ordinary working people and youth have when we begin to get organized and struggle together for our common interests. History shows we have the power to change society through building mass movements that are prepared to engage in a determined struggle.

This election campaign will be a platform to build support for all grassroots movements of the 99% and to appeal to workers and young people to join these campaigns. But we cannot win our goals only through struggles in the streets. We also need to expose and challenge the corporate agenda in every possible arena, including the elections.

For example, Occupy struggles have faced a brutal response from the city and state police and security forces. This was ordered by elected politicians who should be providing security to our citizens as opposed to doing the dirty work for the 1%. I will demand a full investigation into how our state and local government ordered these actions, and push for legislation that bars security forces from attacking social struggles, whether by Occupy, labor, community activists or those defending their homes from foreclosure.

We also need to not only protest inequality and say what we are against; we need to say what we are for, by putting forward a clear alternative to the corporate-dominated political and economic system. Capitalism has clearly failed the 99%. The interests of workers and young people cannot be served within the framework of this rotting system.

As socialists, we believe another world is possible – and necessary – a world based on the needs of humanity and the environment. Please support our campaign and join the struggle for democratic socialism!

What We Stand For:

# We need massive state and federal jobs programs to provide a living wage job for everyone who is looking for work, rebuild our economy with green technology, and expand public transit, education, health care, and affordable housing. Create a publicly owned state bank to invest in jobs in Washington.

# No cuts to social services! No layoffs or attacks on public sector workers! Reverse all budget cuts to education, health care and the Disability Lifeline. Build a powerful anti-cuts movement to force the legislators to listen to our needs, not the corporate agenda.

# Tax the rich and big business! Cancel the hundreds of tax breaks for big business and establish a wealth tax on the super-rich. Use this revenue to expand public services for the 99%.

# Expand funding for K-12 public schools and establish free public higher education. Reduce class sizes. Stop attacks on teachers and our unions. No to the corporate-backed charter school proposals, which will further weaken public education.

# End all cuts to Basic Health and expand it into a comprehensive, statewide single-payer health care system.

# End police brutality and the institutional racism of the criminal justice system. Invest in rehabilitation, job training, and living wage jobs, not prisons or detention centers! Abolish the death penalty.

# Full legalization and equal rights for all undocumented immigrants. No to E-Verify.

# For a woman’s right to choose when and whether to have children. Defend abortion rights. Full reproductive rights, including free birth control, sex education, paid maternity and paternity leave, and high-quality, affordable child care.

# Equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, including same-sex marriage.

# End the war in Afghanistan. Bring all the troops home now!

# Break with the two parties of big business! For a mass workers’ party drawing together workers, young people and activists from Occupy, workplace, civil rights, environmental and antiwar campaigns, to provide a fighting, political alternative to the big business parties.

# Unions, Occupy, and other social movement organizations should not fund or support the Democratic and Republican Parties and, instead, run independent left-wing, anti-corporate candidates.

# Take bankrupt and failing companies into public ownership and run them under the democratic management of elected representatives of the workers and the broader public. Compensation to be paid on the basis of proven need to small investors, not millionaires.

In the world of queers, ‘coming out’ is made like a monster. We need to introspect this very ‘coming out’, which most of the times is said to be a sacrifice for the future generations of gender and sexual minorities. What we need to look at is also how this ‘coming out’ costs us the lives of sexual and gender minorities who like anyone else have dreams, desires, likes and dislikes, rights and assertions. These days the deaths for various reasons in the gender and sexual minorities are alarming. Recently on 9th May 2012, in Kollam (Kerala) Mariya (Anil Sadananadan) was brutally murdered. Her throat was slit and she was stabbed in her stomach. Chilli powder was put on the body so that the police dogs would not sniff. The door was locked from outside when next day her co-workers came to see her.

Mariya a gender and sexuality rights activist was the person who had come out about her being transgender in Kerala and also had divorced her wife. She was colourful, vibrant, humorous, friendly, accepting and caring. Some months ago when there was a crisis in LesBiT, where we had not informed anyone and were trying to handle it on our own, she surprised us by calling to find out about the details and offering support. Usually within the sexual and gender minority community it is rare that male born trans activists offering help or even dignifiedly recognising female born sexual and gender minorities.

In the recent years in Kerala state many trans people have migrated to other cities for they have felt very difficult to survive in Kerala. Some have expressed that if they wanted to live the life of their choice and desire they cannot live in Kerala. At the same time, there are many trans and sexual minority people who have faced the conservative Kerala state and stood firmly in the state. One such person was Mariya. While some of the states in India like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Delhi and West Bengal organised pride marches, Kerala started its pride march for sexual and gender minorities only in the last two years. Mariya was exuberant not just in participating but also in organising the prides.

This patriarchal globalized, capitalist society has a very strong way to silencing the voice of dissent. As child, I have often heard the word ‘tolerance’ in the context of kings and emperors being tolerant to other religions in history lessons. We probably have never thought about ‘gender tolerance’ linking up to sexuality. The word though is beautiful has different articulations may be. Two years ago a Hijra ( A Male to female trans sexual from a particular cultural background in India) friend of ours was brutally murdered because she had slightly longer hair length than what the parents were demanding her to keep. Intolerance can manifest itself in the most brutal monstrous ways.

Mariya’s Face book quote about herself is “I Am Coming Out”, and now for many of us it is scary not just for ourselves but our community that is in danger for when we embrace thiss freedom, the intolerant society can brutally ends us.

The Home Minister

Kerala State

Statement Expressing Concern over the Brutal Murder of Gender/Sexuality Activist
We, the following human rights organizations and concerned individuals, express our shock and deep concern over the brutal murder of gender and sexuality rights activist Anil Sadanandan/Maria. S/he was seen as a warm and friendly activist with full of energy by everyone.

Maria/Anil was murdered at night on May 9, 2012 at their place of residence in Thankassery in Kollam district. The 39 year old activist was deeply connected with the human rights issues of the sexuality minority issues in Kerala. While working at the Harbour Engineering Department of the Kerala State Government, s/he was involved with the preparatory work of Queer Pride 2012, Kerala.

Sexuality and gender minorities as a community have faced various kinds of physical attacks for years from those who are not tolerant of diversities of gender expression or sexuality. This time, it has been brutal, and Maria/Anil was found with cuts on the neck and stab wounds on the stomach. We would like to bring to your attention on the growing tendency in Kerala to use brutal physical violence to deal with differences.

We are also concerned over the growing nature of `blaming the victim’ rhetoric when such a ghastly event takes place. We express our shock over the attempts of the police to question and search the houses of gender/ sexuality activists instead of searching for the real culprits. Already, the gender/ sexuality minorities are facing attacks from the civil society and police in India. Such move by the police will only make this community more insecure.

We also condemn all physical attacks on activists in Kerala and call upon social organizations, activists and people’s movements to come out in a united manner against the politics of physical violence on activists in general.

We therefore demand that:

1. The brutal murder of Anil is promptly and accurately investigated, and the culprits punished.

2. All attacks on the gender/ sexuality minority community are stopped and prevented immediately.

3. Kerala State Government takes active involvement to provide safety and protection to the gender and sexuality minorities.

The article is an update on the continuing repression faced by the people of Idinthakaria and surrounding areas for stalling the commissioning of the nuclear plant, and the virtual silence in the mainstream media on the latest developments there.
http://socialism.in

Japan which was deriving 30% of its electricity needs from nuclear power plants shut down its last nuclear reactor on 5th May this year. On the other hand, in a nation which derives 3-5% of its total electricity needs from nuclear energy, the struggle to shut-down a nuclear plant has faced unprecedented repressions from the state machinery. The Police has filed 107 FIR’s against 55,795 people. 6800 people have been charged with “sedition” and/or “waging war against the State.”

Fresh protests started in Koodankulam on 1st May after the government decided to load the nuclear fuel in the plant even without giving basic safety mock evacuation drills to the nearby villages within the 30 km surrounding area. It is one of the many violations of the International standards that the government is not worried about. More than 330 people have gone on a hunger strike out of which about 300 are women. Around 24,000 voters ID cards have been surrendered in protest against government handling of the protests.
deployment
The mainstream media has been largely silent on the protests that are happening in Koodankulam. The general public in Tamil Nadu is fed with the news of negotiations between the state and central government regarding the share of Tamil Nadu in the electricity generated in the Koodankulam power plant. As P. Sainath beautifully puts it, the media are in a “structural compulsion to lie”. Having integrated themselves into the free market the media is no more in a position to take sides with the people and their rightful protests.

Its times like these when the entire concept of bourgeoisie democracy, where people appear in the scene once in five years and its pillars legislative, executive, judiciary and the press have to be put to ruthless criticism and analysis in front of the people who have dared to challenge the giant state apparatus. The mechanical view of democracy where numbers decide, who is going to rule for the next couple of years, not by the will of the people, but by the will of that class which orchestrates every action of the state. In the issue of nuclear power the entire chapter of capital flow in the name of nuclear fuel and nuclear power plant has been kept away from the people. All that the people are told are “You need power!!”,”We cannot live without electricity”,”Its essential for the nations development”.

Police deployment at Koodankulam

Only when the nuclear issue is analysed within a broader picture of class and imperialism can we understand the role of any technology in any class society. “.. technique and science develop not in vacuum” Trotsky said in one of his lectures “but in human society, which consists of classes. The ruling class, the possessing class controls techniques and through it controls nature.” (Trotsky Radio, Science, Technique, and Society)

The anti-nuke protesters in the Koodankulam will experience yet more repression from state. Democracy under capitalism is not meant for the an open dialogue between the state and the citizens. Its a cloak to the hide “dictatorship of capital” !!!!

It’s a pity that the youth who campaigned for the TMC some 11 months back wants re-election so that they can vote for the CPI(M) led Left Front not because they are good but because they are the lesser evil, or at least that is what they hope now. Because life for them has not really left them with any other alternative rather than to hope against another political hope. So let’s try and look into some of the news that have making headlines lately and the entire hollowness behind what was once hailed as an historical change.

Cartoon: Satish Acharya

To start with the government of West Bengal has managed to rewrite the High School syllabus with a definite political motive which has seen most of the history chapters on the Russian Revolution and Marxism disappear. The attempt is a clear drive to brush off any possibility of the youth of Bengal taking interest in the ideas of Marxism. But what the rulers fail to appreciate is this insecurity within themselves and the crisis of capitalism that has made them rewrite history textbooks in an fruitless effort to wipe out an idea.

Next came the imposition of severe punishments to holders of dissenting opinions and political opponents. A professor, an academic, whose only crime was daring to circulate a cartoon of the Chief Minister of Pashchim Banga (formerly West Bengal). The cartoon depicted Mamata Banerjee as a looter of public money in collaboration with her present Union Railway Minister – Mukul Roy. And as a result the professor was arrested under a provision of law which was never meant for it. Before he was put inside the bar, he was beaten up in broad daylight by some local Trinamool party goons in the presence of local police officials, who were reduced to mere spectators in the whole drama.

In fact her ignorance towards the issues faced by the ordinary working people on the ground has been a talking point for some time now. Mamata Banerjee went to the extent of blaming a rape victim for getting raped only to conspire against her government! Many women’ organizations and activists across the country started rallying against her callousness. But till date the culprits have not been brought to books. In fact the brother of the alleged rapist is a local financier of the party. And that is not all. The police officer who defied Mamata and went on to investigate the rape charges was soon transferred elsewhere. The culprits remain at large and the memory of the rape has been lost to the IPL frenzy.

A few news papers who had occasionally criticized Mamata Banerjee’s rule have also been the target of her ire, so much so that, the state sponsored libraries were directed not to renew their subscriptions under a new law which sought to regulate which papers will be allowed in the libraries. The ones that have been kept out are the ones Ms Banerjee herself has been openly been naming in public as being critical of her.

And more recently came the senseless move by the state government to evict slum dwellers at Nonadanga to be given away to corporate MNC’s. A slum full of refugees and job seeking youth from rural Bengal had come and settled in this locality with an ambition to start a new life with a new job. Nonadanga is what they have been calling home since the time they stepped into the city. A tin roof supported by those loosely held bamboo sticks was all that protected them from the vagaries of the weather.

But on the afternoon of an unfaithful April sun, some municipality bulldozers crushed them to dust while the crying mob was being beaten up by the men in uniform. Even pregnant women were not spared. When it comes to state sponsored terrorism, Mamata Banerjee’s government truly has never discriminated against any caste or creed.

In a recently held public meeting, Ms. Banerjee had the audacity to face thousands of people and proclaimed that her government deserves a 9 out of 10 if evaluated by the sane. Notwithstanding the insanities of her own government, the point is why would people have to dissent if everything is fine as she claims them to be.

The fact remains that people have already become tired of all her boastful lies and fake promises. In a recent move, she has promised to start paying a salary to all maulavis in the state. This did not quite go down well even with her own supporters as the last thing they wanted in the name of change is the same old vote bank politics. Not only does this move goes against all notions of secularism, worse still it comes at the cost of public money in a state that is reeling under a Rs. 2 lakh crore debt.

Besides the infighting between the Congress and the Trinamool has reached new heights and how long this partnership will continue is a question mark. People are definitely fed up of the Bhattacharyas and the Banerjees who are the by-products of the same old tyrannical system based on capitalism and landlordism. What the people of West Bengal really want is a genuine political alternative that stand for the oppressed and the working people of the state.

It was felt that while we engage with workers taking up their workplace demands, it is equally important to raise the consciousness among them on various political, social-economic and cultural issues that they confront in their day to day life. Idea of running workers’ study circle was thus conceived and on the day of international labour day i.e. 1st May we conducted its inaugural session. The session was attended by 130 odd workers from various trade unions in the city. Had it not clashed with other May day programs at factory levels organized by few other trade unions, turn out could have been larger.

In his lead off Adv. R. B. Sharmale, President of Lokkalyan Mazdoor Union and many other unions in various factories introduced on ‘Politics and Workers’ Movement’. Declaring ‘No politics is a dirty politics’ he warned against the general tendency among masses to decry politics as something too dirty, maligned to take part in or engage with. In his eloquent speech he stressed the need for ‘politicisation’ of workers’ movement as capitalist class engaged into anti-working class politics all the time and it was for workers to understand this and safeguard their interests. He also touched upon how the politics in Maharashtra is being monopolised by just few families and their descendants right from independence or even earlier.

Youvraj from Pune branch addressed the rally expounding on the changing character of class exploitation in neo-liberal era pointing at large scale privatization and commercialization of various social services like education, health etc. Citing huge tax concessions given to the capitalist class, he elaborated how State has been brutally acting in the interests of this class at the cost of working masses.

Workers responded enthusiastically and few of them insisted on holding it more often than monthly as currently planned. Young workers were especially motivated. We have formed a committee including representatives from participating unions that would drive the initiative meeting monthly and deciding on topics, speaker and other logistics aspects to ensure it is run collectively and democratically.
