Today’s protest was in remembrance of the world’s worst nuclear disaster that happened in Chernobyl (which was in the then Soviet Union, which now falls in Ukraine) on the 26th of April 1986, which is exactly 25 years ago.
The protest was organized under the banner of Peoples’ Solidarity Concerns, Bangalore, which is coalition of various political, social and Human Rights groups in Bangalore.
The Peoples’ solidarity Concerns (PSC) organized this protest to highlight the danger of Nuclear Industry in the light of Fukushima in Japan which has had disastrous consequences, where thousands have become victims after the Nuclear Reactors blasted due to the Tsunami effect.
We feel that the Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and now Fukushima have given the world enough danger signals, it is time that we wake up and demand a nuclear free world.
The protest also highlighted the continued radiation in the Kaiga nuclear plant in Karnataka, which has of late resulted in the increase of Cancers, Skin disorders and unexplained abortion rates in the 20kms radius surrounding the plant.
Around 200 protesters demanded all the nuclear plants in India to be decommissioned and proper compensation to be paid to the victims of radiation.
Many Political groupings Trade Unionists from Bank Unions, Domestic workers, SC & ST associations, Dalit women organizations and human rights organization members and Film Directors and Media people spoke at the protest rally.
A symbolic effigy of the Nuclear Power/Industry was burnt at the venue of the protest.

We need to build on this and struggle forward to make the world that we live a better and safe place. Of course this takes us to the question of getting rid of the corrupt capitalist system!
